Those interested in transforming old and abandoned properties into income-producing ventures can learn by example from the history of the Howe Scale Company, a business in Vermont dating back to 1876 (including its early years in Brandon). The Howe to Book provides insight into the history of the company, but is more than just a story of the past. When the Howe Scale Company came to Rutland, it had its ups and downs, its good times and its bad times. Co-author Joseph A. Giancola renovated the Howe Scale Company into the current Howe Center. Co-author Don Wickman is a Vermont historian, recognized as the regional authority on the American Revolution site of Mount Independence. He is the author of We Are Coming Father Abra'am: The History of the 9th Vermont Volunteer Infantry and the editor of Letters to Vermont: From Her Civil War Soldier Correspondents. Both authors live in Rutland.

Newfane, Vermont, author Castle Freeman Jr. presents his acclaimed new novel, All That I Have, a March IndieBound Book-of-the-Month choice. Freeman’s pleasantly wicked fourth novel, using his flawless ear for dialogue and his sharp eye for detail, is set in small town rural Vermont. It explores the moral choices of the laconic and gently self-deprecating sheriff, Lucian Wing. The author is a lead essayist for The Old Farmer’s Almanac and, starting in 2009, will contribute essays to each issue of Vermont Life magazine. Mr. Freeman will read from, discuss, and sign copies of his book.
